Mrs. K. Hangs Up Her Class
Some silly antics were going on in Mrs. K.'s Class today ... check it out ...
Gummy Bear Math
Yesterday, we used Gummy Bears for our math lesson. We sorted them by color, counted them, and used them to add and of course subtract - that was the best part! The students asked if we could do it again today, which made me happy!

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, Look Who's in the Green Room!
Friday, May 14, 2010
We raised caterpillars into butterflies. When we got the caterpillars, they were very tiny. They grew and grew, and soon they spun a chrysalis, which hung from the top of the container. Mrs. K. put them into our special butterfly house, and we waited a few more days. All of a sudden, one day we had butterflies! We fed them sugar water on flowers for a while, then we let them go today. It was fun to see them fly so high in the air!

Puppet Day!
This week has been our "Artist in Residency" week. Mel, from Madcap Puppets in Cincinnati, has been with us all week, teaching us how to use puppets, and to think up creative stories for them. On Tuesday evening, parents and students were invited to come to school for our final family literacy night and create their very own puppet. Those who couldn't make it then created theirs today. Here are some of our creations:

Transition Day
Today we visited our first grade schools and classrooms. Since everyone goes to different schools, and some come to kindergarten in the morning and some in the afternoon, this is quite an undertaking for us! About half of our class traveled in the morning, while the other half stayed at Nicklin with Mrs. Davis or Ms. Wehrman. Then in the afternoon, we switched. Be sure to ask your child about their visit to first grade today!
While we were there, we got to have a snack of a cookie and juice in the cafeteria, take a tour of the building, and do some activities with a first grade teacher. We were on our best behavior, and enjoyed being first-graders for the day!

Arbor Day 2010 at Kiwanis Park
To celebrate Arbor Day / Earth Day, the students of Nicklin were invited to participate in planting a tree at Kiwanis Park. We also helped recite the poem "Trees" by Joyce Kilmer.

The poem is below, and each class recited a line of the poem. Our class' line is in bold.
"TREES" by Joyce Kilmer
I think that I shall never see a poem lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is prest against the sweet earth's flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God all day, and lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in summer wear a nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain; Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me, but only God can make a tree.

Moving Back In!
I used to have a classroom blog here on Blogger for a short time. Then I migrated to Wordpress, which is a more robust blog site than Blogger (at least for the time being). However, recently my school district has had to endure many technology changes, and it ended up that the site that hosts our filtering software needed to change that software. As a result, I cannot access Wordpress from school anymore to do any updates. So unless I wanted to do ALL of my work from home, it was necessary to come back to Blogger.
