What a Wacky Wednesday!

What a wAcKy wEdNeSdAy it was today!

First, we noticed that our whole behavior chart was turned upside down! We had to move our frogs down when we were good today!

Most of the charts in our room were upside down, too!

Our chairs were gone, so we had to stand or kneel most of the day!

When we did our Literacy Stations, we were allowed to read under the tables, since there were no chairs!

We even had to write under the tables! This is hard for many of us, but it builds upper arm strength!

Here is our very Wacky Class, in action!

And I asked for one nice pose. Most of us were smiling, anyway ... Aren't they precious?!

Week of Feb. 13

We haven't painted much yet this year, so last Friday I broke out the watercolors and asked the kids to paint their popcorn words. They did a great job, and best of all, nobody spilled their water!

Today, we played Popcorn Word Bingo. I think this one will be a staple, the kids enjoyed it so much!

This shows you how observant I can be. It wasn't until probably 2:00 this afternoon that another teacher noticed these two and pointed it out!

Math Stations this week were the following:

Put the number cards in order by tens, then fill in the missing numbers on the recording sheet. This one turned out to be super-easy for almost everyone.

Roll-a-Love-Bug
Students roll a dice, and draw the corresponding part. These turn out so cute!

Hundreds Chart pictures
Students draw a card, then using the color on the card (pink or red), they color that numbered square. If they finish, they will have a completed picture of a heart.

Scrabble Popcorn Word Addition
Students use scrabble tiles to spell popcorn words, then they trace the word, write the word, and add up their word score.

Students roll the dice and put that many counters on their picture. When the picture is full, they begin to remove pieces when they roll (subtract vs. add). The first one to clear their board is the winner.

Bump! They're loving this game! They roll a dice, and place their cube on that number. If their opponent already has a cube there, they get to "bump" them off. If they already have one of their own cubes on that spot, they get to put a second one on, and that spot is now safe, like a king in checkers. The first one to use all of their cubes is the winner.

Students roll two dice, place the counters in the tray in the correct formation, and complete the number sentence. This student rolled a five and a four, so she placed five bears in the top of the tray, and four in the bottom, then counted them to come up with nine, which she will write in the space on her paper.

It's hard to tell here, but the students had to roll two dice and use rubber stamps to stamp that many pictures on their paper, then circle the set and label it with the correct number.

And of course we couldn't forget the ever-popular computers! Thank you to Logan's parents for donating new headphones for us to use!

Have a great long weekend! Please remember to read to your child and write the titles on their Family Reading Chart. You might want to use this weekend to catch up or even get ahead (we already have one student who has met his goal for this month - Go Evan!)

Can you say "Valentines Candy"?

Can you say Valentines Candy?! This was totally unprovoked by me, and was observed today - two days after Valentine's Day!. Thank goodness we have a long weekend!
We had lots of fun during our Valentine's Party on Tuesday!

First, I gave a large conversation heart to each student, and they had to count and graph the number of letters on their heart.

Next, we estimated how many small conversation hearts we could grab in our hand, then we counted the actual number. As you can see, most of us are pretty good estimators!

We had many treats (thank you parents!), and the students enjoyed exchanging Valentine's Cards, though we ran out of time to look at each one before it was time to go home. While the students were passing out their cards, I made "Bubbly Love Potion" for everyone. They thought this was a hoot! But before you start thinking you'll be planning a wedding in the near future (!), it was just a dollop of raspberry sherbet in the bottom, then half fruit punch and half 7-Up (shhh, don't tell the kids my secret!)

Happy "Balentimes" Day! :D

A Heartwarming Quote ...

Today we had a student who became sad because he missed his aunt because she died. I explained that I was sad and missed my mom. And sweet little Boston piped up, "But they're always in your heart!"

What a wonderful reminder. My mom, who loved helping out in my classroom last year, would have adored your children!

Cowboy RIF - Saddle Up to a Good Book, Pardner!

Yesterday was our second RIF (Reading Is Fundamental) distribution. This wonderful program works to put books in every child's home, hence the free book that your child brought home yesterday! Each distribution has a different theme. This time it was "Saddle Up to a Good Book, Pardner!" Following are some pictures of our visit:

Trying for a ringer in horseshoes!

"Lassoing" a steed!

A selection of the books we had to choose from. This picture doesn't even do it justice - Mrs. Hopkins fills the whole library with books to choose from!

One of our parent helpers put our name in our book so we would know whose it was.

Another parent helper reads to us from our new books.

For our final activity, Mrs. Hopkins taught us how to square dance!

Literacy Stations - Week of Feb. 6

Literacy Stations for the Week of Feb. 6

Students roll a letter dice and graph that letter. Most of them keep rolling till they fill up the whole page - good handwriting practice!

Students use the letter blocks to complete the word, then write it on the recording sheet.

Students put together word puzzles

Students listen for the beginning sound of each word. If it matches the letter at the top of the card, they put a clip on it. Then they color that picture on the recording sheet.

Students read books at their level (right now these are mostly "label" books and high-frequency word books).

Students find a picture and matching word, then write the word on the recording sheet.

Math Stations Week of Feb. 6

This week's centers:

Number puzzles

Mystery Number
Students draw a number out of the "Mystery" (Kleenex) box, then find the matching cards

These are my "gem pages" which have been repurposed. In past years, I have used them for fine motor activities - the students put colored gems on each of the circles. For this more advanced class, I made it into a game. They must roll the die and place that number of erasers on the page until it is full. Then they roll the die and remove that number of erasers until it is empty. The first one to clear their board is the winner.

Number floor puzzle

Bump! Students roll a die and place their marker on that spot. If their opponent already has a marker there, they can be bumped off. If they roll and get a number they already have a marker on, they can "king" their marker, and nobody can bump that one anymore. The first one to use all of their markers is the winner.

Students place the number of beads on the pipecleaner indicated by the flag on top of it, then place all of the pipecleaners in order.

Students draw a card, and stamp that many objects on their paper, then circle the set and write the number.

Students roll two dice, and place counters in the tray to match (a six and a five would be six counters in the top of the tray, five in the bottom). Then they count the total and write the number sentence on their sheet. They are then supposed to find the matching number sentence card, but we're having a bit of trouble fitting all of that in!

Tomorrow I'll try to get pics of our Literacy Stations for this week.
